HISTORY:
He is popular deity in Zen Buddhism which is followed in the countries of China & Japan. A 10th century Chinese monk named Budai, who lived 1000 years ago. He is believed to be the incarnation of Bodhi-sattava Maitreya . He is one among the Seven Lucky Gods of Shinto, in Japan. He was liked & loved in the community , who was extremely generous & jolly wearing a simple robe and having a smile on his face. He was a companionable, pot-bellied monk. He wandered from village to village carrying a large sack over his shoulder. He used to give rice and sweets to children and poor. He is called as Hotei/ Pu-tai. His large belly and sack is considered as Happiness, generosity & wealth.
MATERIALS:
Laughing Buddha statues are available in wood, metal, porcelain, stone. They are usually painted in gold colour. Any material can be kept. There is a belief that if one rubs the belly of buddha everyday with a positive mind, their wishes will be granted.
